By air: Jaisalmer Airport has limited scheduled connectivity, with flight availability varying by season. Jodhpur is another important gateway for travellers combining Jaisalmer with a wider Rajasthan itinerary. By train: Jaisalmer Railway Station is connected to several major Indian cities. Travelling by train can be a convenient option for those planning a longer Rajasthan journey. By road: Jaisalmer is connected by road with Jodhpur and other major destinations in Rajasthan. Private cars, taxis and buses are available depending on the route.
The historic centre and fort are best explored on foot. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are useful for travelling between the old city, railway station and other parts of Jaisalmer. For desert excursions and attractions outside the city, a private vehicle or organised tour is generally more practical.
Jaisalmer has a hot desert climate. Summers are very hot, while winters bring warm days and cool to cold nights. Temperatures can change significantly between daytime and nighttime, especially in the desert. If you are staying overnight near the dunes during winter, bring warm clothing for the evening and early morning.
Jaisalmer is a great place to experience the flavours of traditional Rajasthani cuisine. Local meals often reflect the region’s dry climate and include ingredients and cooking methods that have traditionally worked well in the desert environment.
Look out for dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, ker sangri, bajra roti, pyaaz kachori and other regional specialities. Traditional sweets and snacks are also widely available in the old city and local markets.
For a memorable evening, consider trying a traditional Rajasthani meal at a desert camp or cultural setting, often accompanied by folk music and performances.
Jaisalmer offers several distinct areas and styles of accommodation, from heritage properties inside and around the old city to contemporary hotels and desert camps outside town.
Old City and Fort area: Best for travellers who want to stay close to historic streets, local markets, restaurants and major heritage attractions. The atmosphere is lively and atmospheric, although the narrow lanes can be busy.
Outside the Fort: The area around the fort provides a wider range of accommodation and can be more convenient for travellers looking for easier road access and modern facilities.
Desert camps: Staying near the dunes offers a very different experience, with open desert surroundings, sunset views, cultural performances and opportunities to spend the night away from the city.
For a first visit, combining a heritage-style city stay with a night in the desert can give you a broader experience of Jaisalmer.
Start your sightseeing early, especially during the warmer months, to explore the fort and old city more comfortably.
Wear comfortable footwear as many parts of the old city are best explored on foot.
Carry sun protection, including sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat.
