Before the sea routes and then the border closed it down, this was a corridor between Gujarat's ports and Central Asia, and Jaisalmer taxed everything that passed. The physical evidence is still out there: serai ruins, step-wells cut deliberately a day's march apart, and cairns marking the line.

Your guide can read the spacing of the wells, which turns a stretch of scrub into a legible road. The day finishes on dunes the route ran through.
