A camel does about four kilometres an hour, which is wonderful for an hour and limiting for a day. Pairing the two solves it. The jeep takes you out past Kuldhara — a village of eighty-odd stone houses abandoned in a single night in 1825 and never reoccupied — then along desert track to places a road does not go.

The camel comes in at the end, for the last kilometre into the dunes and the sunset. You see considerably more of the Thar this way than on either safari alone, and the contrast between the two speeds is its own argument.
