Forts photograph well and tell you little about how anybody lives. This route spends its mornings in them and its afternoons and evenings everywhere else — spice market, sweet shops, a pit-loom workshop, and the quarters of Jaisalmer Fort where three thousand people still have addresses.

Fort, market, blue lanes

Mehrangarh at opening, then the spice market, and the afternoon walking Navchokiya's blue lanes with someone who lives in them.
Day 3
West to Jaisalmer
Overnight in Jaisalmer
The desert road, with a block-printing workshop and a Bishnoi village on the way. Into Jaisalmer for sunset.
Day 4
Jaisalmer and the dunes
Overnight in Jaisalmer
The fort's lived-in quarters and a weavers' neighbourhood outside the walls, then out to the dunes for the night.
Day 5
Depart Jaisalmer
Breakfast on the sand and onward transfer.
