Western Rajasthan's forts and havelis were paid for by the caravan trade, and this itinerary follows that money: Jodhpur's fort, Osian's temples from the trade's earliest period, and Jaisalmer's merchant houses from its last.
There is a guide in every town who can read the buildings, an extra night compared with the standard version, and a desert camp at the end so the trip finishes on sand rather than in a car park.

A full day on Jodhpur's architecture, starting at the fort at opening and finishing at the Art Deco palace the city built to survive a famine.
Day 3
Osian
Overnight in Osian
North to Osian: the Sachiya Mata and Mahavira complexes in the morning light, lunch in the town, and a camel ride into the dunes at sunset.
Day 4
Osian to Jaisalmer
Overnight in Jaisalmer
West across the Thar, arriving in time to walk up into the fort as the stone turns gold.
Day 5
Jaisalmer and the dunes
Overnight in Jaisalmer
The havelis and the fort's living quarters in the morning; the Sam dunes, a camel ride, dinner and a night under canvas.
Day 6
Depart Jaisalmer
Breakfast at the camp and onward transfer.
