Camels move at their own speed and there is nothing to do about it, which is most of the point. You leave Jaisalmer after lunch, reach the dunes in around forty minutes, and ride out far enough that the road disappears behind you. Your handler walks alongside; he has done this since he was a boy and knows which line across the sand gives the best view back at the fort.
This is the short form, for people who want the experience without the evening programme around it. If you would rather stay for the sunset, the dinner and the folk musicians, take the sunset safari or the camp instead — same dunes, longer day.
