North Goa covers two things that have almost nothing to do with each other. Between Calangute and Anjuna it is dense — beach shacks, markets, water sports, a restaurant scene that has become seriously good in the last decade, and nightlife that runs to the state's music curfew.
Then, from Morjim north to Arambol, it thins out fast: river mouths, turtle beaches, long sand with cows on it, and the loose long-stay community that has been coming here since the seventies.
Why visit North Goa
Anjuna's Wednesday market and Arpora's Saturday night market are the two best markets in the state.
The Chapora and Mandovi river mouths are the best kayaking, birding and dolphin water in Goa.
The northern beaches — Mandrem, Ashwem, Arambol — are quiet in a way the reputation does not suggest.

Places to visit in North Goa
Vagator
Two small beaches under a cliff, with Chapora fort above and the best sunset view in north Goa.
Morjim
Where the Chapora meets the sea — olive ridley turtles nest here, and the birdlife at the river mouth is exceptional.
Mandrem
A creek, a footbridge and a long beach that stays quiet even in January.
Ashwem
Rock pools at low tide and a handful of very good beachfront kitchens.
Arambol
The sweetwater lake behind the beach, the banyan, and a long-stay community that has been arriving since the seventies.
Baga
Water sports, dolphin boats and the busiest stretch of sand in the state.
Calangute
The centre of everything commercial in north Goa, and the easiest place to organise anything at short notice.
