Fontainhas is the last intact Portuguese-era residential quarter in India, built on reclaimed land in the eighteenth century and still lived in rather than preserved. The colour rules are real — houses are repainted every year after the monsoon, and white is reserved for churches.
We walk it in the late afternoon with a guide from Panjim, ending at the Chapel of St Sebastian and, if you want, a bar that has been serving since the 1930s.
