When the Portuguese demolished temples in the Old Conquests, families carried their deities inland to Ponda, which was then under Bijapur. The temples they rebuilt there developed a distinctive architecture — a Maratha dome, a Portuguese-influenced facade, and a freestanding deepstambha lamp tower that exists nowhere else.
It is one of the more interesting architectural hybrids in India and almost nobody on a Goa holiday sees it.
