Most trips treat the drive to Osian as dead time. It is not. The road runs through Bishnoi country, past khejri woodland, printers who still work with hand blocks and mud resist, and wells that the villages around them still depend on.

We stop four or five times, eat where we are fed, and arrive at the dunes in the late afternoon with the day already behind us rather than still ahead.
